Your house, including its contents, is one of your most expensive investments. That is why you must keep it secure from theft and burglary. But how can you keep it protected without the need to erect a fortress around it?
First, change door and window locks that are broken. Make sure that you get the best locking system available so it would not be easy to pick or open from the outside. Of course, you have to anticipate the fact that intruders would want to break them down. Well, you can always reinforce or renovate them. Considering that you do not need a planning permission to carry out the work, you should not think twice about having access points repaired or replaced.
Second, install good lighting for protection. Did you know that bright fixtures are good deterrents to criminals? For that reason, mount bulbs strategically so that they illuminate dark areas around your home, such as behind rosebushes, trees, or walls. You should also place floodlights at every corner so that the whole area would brighten up at night.
Third, redecorate your interiors. It is a bad idea to tempt thieves by placing expensive objects or ornaments near or across the windows. Giving them an idea of the valuable items they can steal would serve as an encouragement, if not an outright invitation.
Lastly, always keep doors and windows locked whenever you go out. However, keep the lights on to create an illusion that someone is presently at home. You should also install a timer to automatically turn on the fixtures as soon as dusk falls.
